If you’re planning a sod installation in the GTA, timing matters more than most homeowners realize. Lay it too early in spring and late frosts can stunt root growth. Wait too long into summer and the heat stress can kill fresh rolls before they establish.
The Two Best Windows
In Ontario, the ideal times for sod installation are mid-May through late June and mid-September through mid-October. Spring gives the grass a full growing season to establish deep roots. Fall offers cooler temperatures and more consistent moisture, which means less watering on your end.
Soil Prep Is Everything
Before a single roll goes down, the existing soil needs to be graded, amended, and leveled. We typically add a layer of quality topsoil and rake it to a consistent grade with a 1% slope away from the house for drainage. Skipping this step is the number one reason DIY sod jobs fail within the first year.
Watering Schedule
New sod needs heavy watering for the first two weeks — we’re talking twice daily for 20-30 minutes per zone. After that, you can taper to once daily, then every other day as the roots take hold. Most GTA municipalities have watering bylaws, so check your local rules before you start.
What About Seed?
Hydroseeding and traditional seeding are cheaper upfront, but sod gives you an instant lawn with far less risk of washout, weed invasion, or patchy coverage. For most residential properties in Oakville, Burlington, and Mississauga, sod is the better investment.
